Borderlands is a 2009 action role-playing first-person shooter developed by Gearbox Software and published by 2K. As the game that launched the Borderlands franchise, it introduced a bold blend of shooter action and RPG mechanics wrapped in a distinctive cel-shaded visual style.
Set on the lawless frontier planet of Pandora, the story follows four mercenaries known as Vault Hunters. Drawn by rumors of a mysterious Vault said to contain powerful alien technology and unimaginable wealth, they battle hostile wildlife, ruthless bandits, and rival factions while uncovering clues to the Vault’s true nature. Along the way, the Vault Hunters must ultimately stand against the Atlas Corporation and its private military, who seek the Vault’s power for themselves.
Borderlands combines fast-paced first-person shooting with deep role-playing elements, leading Gearbox to describe it as a “role-playing shooter.” At the start of the game, players choose one of four unique characters, each with their own special ability and combat strengths. Missions are acquired through non-player characters and bounty boards, rewarding experience points, money, and powerful gear.
As players level up, they earn skill points that can be invested into expansive skill trees featuring three distinct specializations per character. These allow for highly customizable playstyles, from precision sniping and gunslinging to summoning companions for combat support. Skill points can be reallocated for a fee, encouraging experimentation and replayability.
Released worldwide in October 2009 for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC, Borderlands sold over two million units by the end of its launch year and is widely regarded as one of the most influential and beloved games of its generation. On PlayStation 3, Borderlands delivers a chaotic, loot-driven adventure that defined an entire franchise.
