NHL FaceOff 98 for PlayStation sparked a wide range of opinions among critics, with feedback often directly contradicting itself. Electronic Gaming Monthly reviewers Kraig Kujawa and John Ricciardi found the A.I. too easy on the hardest setting, while co-reviewer Kelly Rickards argued it’s frustratingly difficult. Sound effects received mixed reactions—GameSpot and GamePro praised on-ice effects, yet Kujawa and IGN felt they lacked excitement and atmosphere.

Controls were another point of debate. Next Generation criticized the game for awkward handling, and GameSpot and IGN found the configuration confusing, even with icon passing enabled. In contrast, Kujawa and IGN praised the controls as tight, responsive, and realistic. Player animation also divided reviewers: many lauded the lifelike movements during shooting and checking, but GameSpot and GamePro noted stiff skating animations.
