Spot: The Video Game – Nintendo Entertainment System (NES)
Step into a unique piece of gaming history with Spot: The Video Game for the Nintendo Entertainment System. Developed and published by Virgin Mastertronic in 1990/1991, this classic title marks the first video game appearance of Spot, the iconic 7 Up mascot. Its success later led to popular follow-ups such as Cool Spot and Spot Goes to Hollywood.
Unlike traditional action games of the era, Spot: The Video Game delivers a thoughtful strategy-based experience inspired by the classic board game Othello (Reversi), originally dating back to 1883. Gameplay takes place on a 7×7 board, with certain variations featuring blocked spaces that add an extra layer of challenge.
Players take turns controlling pieces of a specific color, competing to dominate the board. On each turn, a player selects one of their existing pieces and places or moves it to an empty space one or two squares away. A one-square move creates a new piece, while a two-square move relocates the original piece. After each move, all adjacent pieces are converted to the current player’s color, creating constant shifts in control and strategy.
